Chalkboard unveils exclusive widget for Malaysian HTC users

Singapore-based geolocation ad platform Chalkboard today unveiled its “Pina Colada” project, a codename for its collaboration with mobile handset manufacturer HTC in Malaysia. Through this partnership, HTC users in Malaysia would be able to access real-time updates and promotions through Chalkboard’s exclusive widget, available to all HTC handsets in Malaysia that run on Google Android 2.1 and above.

The widget would allow users to access promotions within a five-kilometer radius, as well as business addresses, operating hours and directions. It also uses Google Maps to provide directions to business locations listed on Chalkboard in the shortest route possible.

“In addition to adding value to the HTC user experience, this partnership also helps our business customers, especially smaller businesses, who often cannot afford traditional marketing and who benefit more from targeting local consumers versus using mass media,” said Chalkboard CEO and co-founder Saumil Nanavati in a press release.

According to Chalkboard, they have 1 million users in Malaysia since its official launch here in January 2011, and have since served up more than 10 million impressions. It also said that it has more than 1,700 “points of interest”, which includes shoplots and retail outlets that use Chalkboard as an advertising platform.

The widget is available to download from HTC, but currently will not be bundled in a package that would be pushed to users. To download the widget, users would have to send in an SMS to 32355 with one of the following messages:

- SMS chalk
- SMS chalkboard
- SMS htc

After doing so, users would receive a reply with an URL from which they can download the widget. Instruction leaflets on downloading the widget would also be included with every HTC smartphone device.

Chalkboard did not disclose how many users they are planning to target with its latest initiative.
